Barrow to speak with midfielder Hughes this week about his future

Barrow AFC will seek to discover if Liam Hughes still wants to leave Holker Street this week. The midfielder handed in a transfer request last month.

But whereas Alex-Ray Harvey did the same and was quickly the subject of a £10,000 move to Guiseley, linking up once more with former boss Paul Cox, Hughes has remained with the Bluebirds.

Since the arrival of new manager Ady Pennock, Hughes has been deployed in a new role in the centre of defence, in a three-man back-line alongside the Tony Diagne and Paul Bignot, or Bignot and Moussa Diarra.

It is a position he has shown previously unheralded ability in, impressing in both matches, and seemingly enjoying himself working under Pennock.

AFC managing director Andrew Casson said the club hoped to speak with Hughes this week to find out if he still wanted his transfer request – handed in while Micky Moore was in charge, following the exit of Paul Cox, who brought the midfielder to the club – to stand.

"There has not been any change," said Casson regarding the request. "We will seek clarification this week on whether he wants to stay or not.

"Adrian has liked what he has seen from Liam in terms of going into a new position and handling himself well. His attitude has been okay too.

"It is in Adrian's ball-park, but it's one of things we need to know."
