Defeat Made Colbran's Life Easier

Simon Colbran, manager of Ryman League Division One South club Horsham, has apologised to supporters for Tuesday's 3-1 loss at Epsom, but revealed that the manner of defeat has enabled him to make his mind up on a number of potential players.

The shock result, against the Combined County Leaguers, put a dent in Colbran's hopes for an unbeaten pre-season but the manager (pictured) believes that the result would have been far different if he "had done things properly".

"I don't want to sound disrespectful towards Epsom but it was like a Sunday morning game," he said. "The pitch had no grass on it, it was an open field that was all weeds and dust and the changing rooms were unreal. We had to take all our stuff out pitchside with us!

"We put a strong side out in the first half, had 85 per cent of possession and created lots of chances but just weren't able to take any of them. On another day we'd have gone in 5-0 up at half-time as they gave us no problems at all. But the second half we changed it all around, sent on all the trialists and it was a different story.

"I was really disappointed with some players but it was an effective evening for Gary and myself because we were able to see that some of them just weren't good enough and it's actually made things a lot easier for us now.

"We've taken a look at a lot of players over the last couple of weeks and need to cut our squad down a bit so if we'd won seven or eight nil then it would have been quite difficult to release some of them. But this is why clubs have these pre-season games, to take a look at new players, the trialists and what have you, and see if any are worth taking on.

"I would like to say a special thanks to our supporters who gave up their Tuesday evening to make the journey with us. It was really appreciated and I'm just sorry that they had to watch that second half performance in particular. Hopefully they'll understand that if I'd have managed the side correctly, if it had been a league or cup game, then there's no question that the result would have been very different!"
