Gateshead want Newcastle support at Watson's first home match

Gateshead hope to cash in on Steve Watson's return to Tyneside after almost a two decade absence when they host Dover Athletic on Saturday.

Watson was unveiled as the Heed's new manager three weeks ago but has had to wait for his first game at the International Stadium.

The 43-year-old's first three games were all away from home, the first an FA Cup win at Northern Premier League outfit Buxton.

That will see Watson's men back on home soil the weekend after the Dover game, against Chelmsford City.

Watson has started well winning two of his three games, including an excellent display in a 2-0 win at Leyton Orient.

Chairman and joint-owner Richard Bennett has been frustrated and disappointed with results on the pitch and attendances off it this season.

While it would have been preferable for Watson's first home game to have come earlier Bennett is hopeful interest will be stirred on Saturday.

"Steve Watson gave great service to Newcastle United and was part of the side which was dubbed 'The Entertainers' under Kevin Keegan, " said Bennett.

"With Newcastle not playing on Saturday, and given the standing he has among Magpies fans, I'd like to think some will come along to back us against Dover.

"It is his first job as a manager, it's a new era at Gateshead and it would be great to see Geordie football fans rally around."
