Hippolyte Relishing Gillingham Test

Johnson Hippolyte, manager of Conference South club Maidenhead United, said Tuesday's visit of Gillingham to York Road is a 'daunting prospect', but one the club is looking forward to.

United will welcome Martin Allen's League One side to York Road, and Hippolyte (pictured) said the match would provide his players with a yard stick to show where they are ahead of the Conference South season.

The pre-season game has been organised as part of the deal which took Devante McKain from Maidenhead to the Gills last season.

"They are going to be a proper test," said Hippolyte.

"They were promoted last season and won the league by some distance.

"They have promised to bring down a first team so we're looking forward to it."

Hippolyte said Gillingham has been in pre-season training for a couple more weeks than his players, so would likely be fitter and sharper. He said he expects Maidenhead to have to defend for long periods of the game.

"Gillingham have been in a couple more weeks than we have and will be sharp and fit, so we'll have to play a lot without the ball," he said.

"They were top of their league throughout the season and won it with games to spare, and Martin Allen has strengthened in the summer so it's a daunting prospect."
