Holdsworth Junior Impresses For City

Youngster Jordan Holdsworth, son of Chelmsford City manager Dean, netted the Conference South club's winning goal at Oakside on Saturday as his team battled back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Redbridge 4-3, prompting praise from his father as the visitors recorded their first victory under his stewardship.

Striker Jordan was on trial as City took on the Ryman League side, and Dean said: "I was so pleased for Jordan because he's had a really tough 15 months or so. He's battled back from illness and the manner of his departure from Aldershot was disappointing. He was a bit of a surprise addition to the squad but he's scored the winner today and things are really looking up for him. He could be an asset for us."

Chelmsford moved in front a dozen minutes into the warm-up fixture when central defender Mark Haines, reigning Player of the Year, signalled his intent for the new campaign by planting a header into the net beyond the hosts' goalkeeper. However, a flowing Motormen counter-attack shortly before the half-hour point levelled the scores and further goals on 53 and 58 minutes built a 3-1 lead.

Holdsworth will have been pleased with his team's response, initiated by a superb overhead kick goal by defender Danny Webb as he returned to his more attacking roots from earlier in his career to reply at 3-2 in the 64th minute. Midfielder Christian Smith added a third four minutes later, again with a header, and the fight-back was sealed when Holdsworth Jnr converted his 76th-minute clincher.

The Clarets' boss (pictured) reflected on a useful exercise, adding: "It was nice to go back and say a belated thanks to Redbridge for my time there because I've not been back since the play-off final. It was a good workout for us on what was a very, very difficult pitch and bearing in mind there were a few players not involved today.

"At half time we could have been four or five goals up - we created some really good chances. There's lots of stuff we can get better at so we'll get busy with the detail after another useful 90 minutes. I'm delighted with the signings we've made this week and will look to extend our squad wherever I can."
