Interesting reports on Wednesday morning that John Carver is in the frame for the Gateshead job.

Neil Aspin has joined Port Vale as manager today, returning to the club where he spent many years as a player.

Gateshead had a goalless draw at AFC Fylde last night with Neil Aspin absent, the result leaves the Tynesiders in 15th position in the National League, though only eight points off Macclesfield who are the early leaders.

The Chronicle have named both John Carver and Richard Money as front runners for the Gateshead job, Money left his role as Academy Director at Norwich in August, a position he also once held at Newcastle United back in 2008.

As for John Carver, he was sacked by Cypriot club Omonia eight months ago and has been making regular appearances in the media as he looks for his next job.

Carver was actually approached for the Gateshead job over 10 years ago.

He left Newcastle in 2004 after Sir Bobby Robson was sacked and Graeme Souness brought in his own coaching staff. John Carver ending up at Leeds United as assistant to Kevin Blackwell.

Whilst out of work, Gateshead admitted in March 2007 that they had been turned down after an approach.
