Keates still out to strengthen Dragons squad

Dean Keates says he is still actively looking to bolster his Wrexham squad, after coming to an agreement to extend the loan of Alex Reid for an extra month.

The Dragons boss revealed he had a couple of trialists at the Racecourse this week as he looks to add competition to places, and was delighted to secure the services of Reid until mid-November from parent club Fleetwood Town.

"It (Reid's initial deal) was only two months, it is all in place to have it extended to the full 93 days, and that is in place," said Keates."

"Alex has done well, we have had to be mindful that he has not played any competitive minutes. He had done only a pre-season in their development team, he'd been in and out of the first team squad and not picked up any minutes.

"So Alex has come in and got the goal on his debut against Gateshead and then went straight in and played a lot of 90 minutes, so we had to be wary that we are not pushing him too much.

"It is the same with Akil (Wright), he is in a similar situation.

"Alex has picked up a few minutes with the first team (at Fleetwood), but Akil has not even played in the development team until he has come with us. And he has not played six competitive mens football games on the bounce before, so we have to be wary of that and having spoken to him he felt a little bit tired after the Hartlepool game in the last 15 minutes."

And while he is delighted to be able to keep Reid for another month, Keates revealed he is still searching for more players to strengthen his squad.

"We have got a couple of trialists in this week to have a look at and run our eye over, and we will go back and watch them at the clubs they are at," said the Racecourse chief.
