Mehew To Have Another Look At Tigers Hopefuls

Dave Mehew, manager of Conference North club Gloucester City, doesn't want to deal with "one game wonders", instead he wants his crop of trialists to back up solid starts and earn a place in his squad.

Goalkeeper Steve Sparrow and defenders Ryan Batten and Lewis Binns have impressed the City boss in pre-season outings and are set to feature again at Brimscombe & Thrupp tonight (7.30pm).

And the trio will go into action at the Meadow with words of encouragement from the City boss in the ears as they bid to earn a place in his squad for the Conference North season.

"It's a chance for me to mix up the trialists and the first teamers as I want to break the squad down by the weekend and move forward with the group from then," Mehew (pictured) said.

"So the message will be that it's a last chance for a few of them to impress and try and earn a place.

"It's important that we go to Brimscombe and show that we're a good side, just as Cheltenham showed that they were a good side on Saturday and to do that the trialists will need to perform."

Left-back Binns is currently part of the Hartpury College Junior Academy having previously been involved in the Newport County and Cardiff City academies.

Selected for the England Under-18s Schoolboy's squad last season, he impressed the City boss with an all action display in the 1-0 friendly win at Brislington on Friday night.

"Lewis has come in and done well, he's got a bid of pedigree having been involved with the England Schoolboys side and he's one for the future.

"He will be a work in progress and I certainly like the look of him from the couple of games he's had, but it's crucial that he now backs that up and continues to perform."
