New stadium sponsorship deal for Merstham FC

Specsavers in Redhill is proud to announce their new annual corporate sponsorship of Merstham Football Club. The deal was made with the Club during the National Eye Health Week after negotiations with Merstham FC's Commercial Management Team; once fully implemented the ground will become known as The Specsavers Stadium.

To kick off the partnership with aplomb, Specsavers – located at 1-2 Central Parade in Redhill – invited two players to experience an eye test and help its team of opticians promote the importance of eye health to the community during National Eye Health Week (18-24th September). The players, Ryan Hall (aged 29) and Chris Haigh (aged 21), both met with store Director, Nick Bradshaw for their examinations and heard first-hand the shocking statistic that people put the wellbeing of their boiler ahead of their own sight. A new report published by the charity Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and Specsavers shows that half of UK adults have their boiler serviced once a year, over a third renew their mobile phone contract every two years, while only 50 per cent of UK adults last had their eyes tested more than a year ago or never.

Ryan was surprised by the report's findings. He said: 'Nick explained that one in five people will live with sight loss in their lifetime despite at least half of all cases being avoidable.' Chris adds: 'I didn't realise that more than 80 per cent of people are not aware that an optician can spot the early signs of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the UK. 'Nick Bradshaw goes on to explain alarming new statistics that show every day, 250 people start to lose their sight in the UK. He says: 'Almost six million people in the UK currently live with sight-threatening conditions yet 25 per cent of people are not having an eye test every two years as recommended by the College of Optometrists. The extent of the problem means that nearly every family in Britain is touched by sight problems in some way.'

He continues: 'I know from experience that all of us aged three upwards should be having our eyes tested regularly because of what an optician can detect. Worryingly, the survey shows that almost a quarter of people are ignoring the first signs of sight loss, despite not being able to see as well in the distance or close up as they used to, and have not sought advice from an optician or medical professional.'

Explaining why they invited Merstham football players to the store, Nick says: 'We are delighted to sponsor this amazing club and it's the perfect partnership for us a business, promoting health and wellbeing in the local community. If any group of sports players need good vision, it is footballers! We hope that their support and willingness to look after their own eye health will resonate with their supporters and encourage fans to book an eye test.'

The State Of The Nation Eye Health 2017: A Year in Review report, is an annual benchmark of Britain's eye health by RNIB and Specsavers, who joined forces in 2016 to raise awareness of the importance of eye health at every level to help prevent avoidable sight loss. While a YouGov survey commissioned for the report suggests 1.1 million more people took action to improve their eye health by visiting an optician since the campaign launched last September, there is much still to be done. The report, written by RNIB and Specsavers and supplemented by an independent YouGov poll of 6,430 UK adults, marks the stepping up of RNIB and Specsavers Transforming Eye Health Campaign, which will include a multi-million pound investment in marketing and nationwide fundraising.
