Plummer Expecting Steady Steelmen Progress

Chris Plummer is hoping to see some steady progress from Conference North club Corby Town as they make their way through the pre-season campaign.

The Steelmen's preparations started with a 4-0 home defeat to Conference Premier side Cambridge United at Steel Park on Wednesday night with all the goals coming in the second half.

But Plummer (pictured) was far from downhearted with his team's first-half display as all the summer signings were given a run out before the inevitable changes to the line-up came after the break.

Corby are back in action at Daventry Town on Saturday as they continue the build-up to what they hope will be a promotion challenge in the Calor League Premier Division.

And Plummer is hoping to give his senior players even more time on the pitch as they continue to build their fitness levels.

"It was our first game on Wednesday and it was against a side who are a bit ahead of us in terms of pre-season," the Corby boss said.

"I thought our first-half performance was pretty good. We held them to 0-0 and had a couple of chances ourselves. We have built virtually a new team and it will take time for them to gel as a unit.

"Obviously we made a few changes in the second half to have a look at some of the younger lads who will make up our under-21 team and Cambridge took advantage of that.

"We won't get too carried away by the scoreline. At the moment it is all about building the fitness but we do want to be winning matches and that's what we will try to do.

"It will be a different type of game for us on Saturday. We should see plenty of the ball but I am sure Daventry will make it hard for us.

"The key for me will be to give the lads more time on the pitch. Some of them just played 45 minutes on Wednesday and we will be looking to increase that at the weekend.

"Pre-season is all about making progress week by week."
