Roms academy goes up a degree

Ambitious Romulus FC are set to take their acclaimed Academy to a new level, with the introduction of a Bachelor of Science degree programme aimed at 18 to 24 year olds.

The Sutton Coldfield based club have teamed up with Gemeg Education, with the intention to offer a BSc Degree in Sport Science and Coaching Football. The course will be delivered entirely online, but the Academy students will gain day to day practical experience at Roms Academy HQ in Lindridge Road.

“This is a very exciting new development for us, and one that we are pursuing with great enthusiasm,” said Roms Head of Academy, Andy Turner. “It gives an opportunity for bright lads with A-levels to further their education to a high level, that will hopefully set them up for a thriving career in the football industry.

“But they’ll also be useful and enthusiastic football players, so doing this degree at our Academy also gives them the potential to play football with us at a good standard, maybe make it to our first team, and who knows, rise through the ranks to the professional game – anything’s possible!”

The BSc course is run by Gemeg Education in conjunction with the University Centre of Doncaster, and accredited by the University of Hull, and modules include Psychology in Football, Applied Physiology in Strength and Conditioning, Advanced Football Coaching Practice, Nutrition in Football Performance, and Talent Development in Football.

In addition to formal study, Gemeg have also formed a partnership with the University of Valencia, giving students the opportunity to study abroad during their second or third year, where they can train at the La Nucia centre in Spain with local based teams, and further their knowledge of the European game.

"Initial feedback from our Degree has been extremely encouraging," said Alex Williamson, Business Development Manager at Gemeg. "We have met with a number of Premier League and Football League clubs, as well as private academies and those at Non-League clubs such as Romulus, whose Academy is highly respected, and they are all massively excited to offer this to their young players.

"Young player development is key to any sports franchise, both on and off the pitch, and we believe our BSc degree in Sport Science and Coaching Football is the next step in helping to achieve that."

Students completing the BSc course will be equipped with skills leading to potential careers in performance analysis, football coaching, coach-educator, sports development officer, strength and conditioning coaching, sports psychology, or Academy coaching.

Said Andy Turner: "Aspiring footballers are increasingly looking at attaining good qualifications to provide them with wider career options and - perhaps more in the case of Non League players - a career in addition to football, or a career within football if not as a professional player.

"Although the academic part of the course is done online, we will encourage and support students, and they'll have access to our classrooms and other facilities at all times.

"For us at The Roms, this is another big step forward in the short history of our Academy, which is doing fantastically well on and off the pitch, and we're really proud of the opportunities we're providing."
