Room for improvement but derby win delights Wrexham's Keates

Dean Keates clearly has high standards as he cut the figure of a frustrated man despite his Wrexham side claiming all three points and local bragging rights following a 1-0 win over neighbours Chester on Wednesday night.

But while he felt his side were lacking a clinical edge at times, the manager was adamant Wrexham had deserved the win on the back of their defensive hard work.

Skipper Shaun Pearson headed the only goal of the game as he met Marcus Kelly's wicked free kick just before the interval to ensure victory and move Wrexham to second in the table below leaders Dover Athletic only on goal difference, despite having played a game more.

It wasn't pretty at times at the Deva Stadium, Wrexham putting in another solid defensive display but finding chances at the other end hard to come by.

And despite being delighted to have claimed all three points, Keates felt his side had slipped below the standards they have set themselves.

"I enjoy winning any game," said the manager. "(There is) a little bit more added spice being a local derby and we gave the fans what they wanted and that was three points.

"It is up there, it is nice, it is a local derby and I know what it means to the fans and the town and the football club, but I won't put any three points bigger than another, we don't get five points for it.

"We don't get five points for that, we get three points, we will enjoy it, but the lads will have one or two days extra off now, but we will recover and get ourselves ready for Ebbsfleet next week.

"It isn't just the defence, it is all over, but a few times they did get through us a little bit too easily and that is something we need to look at.

"On another day you might concede, but we have come away from home and we've been well organised, they have been disciplined and set piece... we work on stuff, Shaun has arrived on it and we have won 1-0 and kept a clean sheet.

"The lads in there are resilient and the character they've shown, especially in the last 20 minutes against a lot of direct balls going into the box, to a man everyone stood up to be counted."
