An Interview With Seaham Red Star Winger Dean Nicholson

Luke Donkin takes a few minutes out with winger Dean Nicholson to quiz him about his life within football.

Dean currently plys his trade with Northern League Division Two club Seaham Red Star, and has previously played for West Bromwich Albion, and since his release from The Hawthorns, he has maintained an excellent reputation having enjoyed successful spells with clubs including Boston United, Workington, West Allotment Celtic, Newcastle Benfield and Hebburn Town.

Luke asked him ten questions in a 'Soccer AM' style quiz.

LD:  Where did your footballing career begin?

DN:  I started as a kid at Cramlington Juniors and then Killingworth. I loved playing with my school mates at the time. That's when I got seen by West Bromwich Albion, and the rest is history!

LD:  What has been your greatest football moment as a player to date?

DN:  My greatest moment was probably scoring two on my youth-team debut and trial game at West Bromwich Albion at home to Bolton Wanders. I signed a two-year deal after the game.

My greatest Northern League memory is winning Division One with Newcastle Benfield. We came from nowhere to pip Spennymoor Town to the title on the last minute away at Penrith!

LD:  Who is the one footballer you liken yourself to?

DN:  I don't liken myself to many to be honest. I get Gary Taylor-Fletcher off the Seaham lads? Does that count!

LD:  Who inspired you to begin playing football?

DN:  I was inspired by a few to be honest. I watched Newcastle United and Alan Shearer as a kid! My brother, Stuart Nicholson, inspired me a lot too. He played first-team football at West Brom and done well at many Football League clubs, so yeah, I would go with my brother!

LD:  Who is the worst dresser for Seaham Red Star?

DN:  Without a shadow of doubt, Rob MacGregor! He is the goalkeeping coach, he wore some rascal green pants on the last team night out, which were burnt to bits in his garden the next day! Shocking!

LD:  Who is the laziest trainer for Seaham Red Star?

DN: Laziest trainer? After me, I would say David Palmer, he struggles in training! Darryll Donnelly is another bad trainer!

LD:  What are your pre-match superstitions?

DN:  I don't really have any. I travel to every game with my mate Darren Reay. We normally get the music blasting and get eachother pumped up, normally by hammering each other!

LD:  What is your favourite drink?

DN:  My favourite drink is a tough choice! I drink Budweiser on a night out all the time, or after games. New signing Sonny Andrews has been a bad influence on me since joining. We were sat in Stokesley till 10pm after a game, and normally get in from training about midnight thanks to him!

LD:  What is your avourite album?

DN:  I'm not a huge music fan, try being in the Seaham changing room with Darryll Donnelly's music, I can guarantee it will turn you off too!

LD:  Who do you think will win the Northern League Division Two this season?

DN:  I have to go with Seaham don't I? We are on a great run at the minute with some tough games coming up. It's a very tough league this year. Washington, Ryhope CW, Norton & Stockton Ancients and Team Northumbria will all fancy themselves, but I will go with The Star!
