Busy Pools bring in former Magpies youngster

Hartlepool United manager Craig Harrison has continued his rebuilding of the Pools squad with the addition of former Newcastle United and Plymouth Argyle forward Ryan Donaldson.

The twenty six year old completed the move on Wednesday and becomes Harrison's fifth new signing since he took over as manager earlier this month.

During his time with Newcastle United, Donaldson had a two-month loan spell at Victoria Park in 2011.

He also gained England caps at Under-17 and Under-19 level during his time with the Magpies academy.

He made four appearances for the Magpies before being released in 2012.

A move across the River Tyne saw Donaldson join Gateshead in time for the 2012/13 season.  He went on to score eight goals in the National League before joining Cambridge United - managed by former Newcastle United academy director Richard Money - on a two-year deal in May 2013.

Donaldson became a Wembley hero with Cambridge on two occasions during a historic 2013/14 season.

He scored twice in the U's 4-0 FA Trophy Final win over Gosport Borough, before coming back to haunt former club Gateshead with the winner in the National League promotion final just weeks later.

Donaldson left Cambridge United in May 2016 and signed for SkyBet League Two club Plymouth Argyle.

Last season he made over twenty five appearances for Argyle, scoring two goals.

Now he returns to his native North East and will hope to help Pools bounce back into the Football League at the first attempt.
