Carlisle United seal signing of Barrow striker Bennett

SkyBet League Two club Carlisle United have completed the signing of Barrow striker Richie Bennett for an undisclosed fee.

Bennett has agreed a two-year deal with the Cumbrians.

The twenty five year old began his career at Oldham Athletic's academy and went on to have spells with Curzon Ashton, Mossley and Ashton United after leaving the Latics.

He joined Northwich Victoria in 2014 and played a key role in their run to the Second Round of the FA Cup in 2015.

A goal from Bennett put the Vics two goals up at Northampton Town, only to see the Cobblers score three times in the last seven minutes to dash any hopes of a big Third Round tie.

At the end of 2015/16 season Bennett joined former Vics team mate Jordan Williams at Barrow, after the Bluebirds beat a number of clubs to his signature.

At the time Barrow manager Paul Cox commented “I think this kid is a bit special. He’s got a very articulate left foot, he’s good with his back to goal, he’s big and he’s quick.

“I’ve been watching him for a while. We watched him that often and we believe he’s a great player.”

Last season Bennett made just under fifty appearances for Barrow, scoring sixteen goals.

He now takes the next step in his career as he moves into the Football League with Carlisle United.

The Cumbrians joint assistant manager Lee Dykes believes that the powerful frontman has all of the attributes to succeed at Brunton Park.

Speaking to the club's official website he said “This is a player the manager has been tracking for a while and it's always nice when you finally get it over the line.

"He's progressed through the non-league circuit and scored goals every step of the way.

"He has attributes we feel will add to what we already have in the building and he's coming here really keen to do well.

"We think we've got ourselves a really good player and we're looking forward to working with him."

Bennett could make his Cumbrians debut when they entertain League One club Blackburn Rovers at Brunton Park on Friday night.
