Foal Play At Ashington's Woodhorn Lane

There was plenty of horseplay at Ashington AFC's match last week, when an unusual spectator showed up.

Spectators at a Northern League game got more than they bargained for – when they were joined in the crowd by a horse.

Fans of Ashington were taking in the early stages of Friday night's Northern League Division One clash with Crook Town at Woodhorn Lane, when the unlikeliest of matchgoers made its appearance.

The horseplay was captured on camera by Martin Bamforth, from Somerset, who had travelled hundreds of miles to the Northumberland outfit's Portland Park home on the first day of an organised ground hop.

He recalled: "They have got a wooden perimeter fence around the pitch, there is an emergency exit at the far end, they have it open.

"Quarter of an hour, 20 minutes, into the game, this horse just walked in.

"I was at the far end, it was just fairly surreal. This horse, it just appeared."

A dark brown and white beast, the creature's colours were a close match for the home side's black and white stripes.

The visitor drew a mixed reaction, with one spectator doing a double take, another blissfully unaware of what was going on and a third "jumping" out of its way.

The game continued as fans tried to escort the non-paying spectator from the ground.

Martin added: "When they tried to catch it the first time, he did a little bit of a bolt.

"It did not really want to leave the game, basically it just wanted to continue watching it.

"It did not want to go out, it stood around."

Eventually, the horse was shepherded back through the exit by a couple of cautious spectators, one on either side.

Martin, who travels all over the country to watch grass roots football, had been at the game as part of the holiday weekend ground hop which was organised by Northern League bosses.

Like himself, game hoppers came from across the country, with some even at Ashington from Germany.

The attendance, he quipped, was 597 "plus a horse."

"It was just so weird.

"I do watch lots of football and that was the oddest thing I have seen."
