Gargan was imprisioned after being found guilty of racically abusing a 24 year old pregnant women in a pub.

He was sentenced to four months in prison by Judge Anthony Niblett, who said the word he used last April was “totally abhorrent” and “had no place in today’s society”.

He also said Gargan’s standing in society had “made him think he was above the law”.

After Gargan was sentenced, the Hawks took advice from the Sussex FA and have clarified that Gargan was not an owner or director at the club and no longer has any connections with the club.

A Hawks statement read "In spite of what was reported in the press, we would like to make it clear that Mr Gargan was not an owner or a director and he never had any executive role at the club. His capacity as former President was as a volunteer and sponsor, however he no longer has any connections in any capacity with Whitehawk FC.

"The club took advice from the Sussex FA once it became aware of the situation through the press, we took the advice into consideration, which resulted in the necessary steps being taken.

"We would like to thank our amazing fans for their support , patience and understanding while the club dealt with this matter and we would also reiterate our clubs core values against any intolerance towards anybody no matter who in our society, we are all equal in every respect.

"We now look forward to our pre season program and wish our new manager Jimmy Dack and his new players all the very best for the new season. The club will be making no further comments on this and consider the matter now closed"
