IF I WAS THE MANAGER: Willenhall Town

In the second part of a new feature we ask a fan to step into the dugout of their favourite club and plan the summer ahead.

This week it's the turn of Russell Enyon - a supporter of West Midlands Regional League club Willenhall Town - to tell us what he would do if he stepped into the dugout with the Lockmen this summer.

Which players would you make a priority to keep in the squad?
Chadd Birch 29 goals and player-manager Mark ‘Habba’ Habbershaw with 23 goals.

These two scored 3/4’s of the team's goals last season. With Habba announcing he is no longer managing the club there has been huge interest for this local legend.WillenhallTownLogo

Which players would you let go?
None. We should stick with the team that improved as the season progressed in the hope that they can sustain the improvement to enable a top 10 finish.

However with the manager leaving this may lead to the majority of the squad following.

Realistically where do you think needs strengthened?
Defensively we were poor at times, 9-1 and 7-1 defeats to champions Haughmond, 8-0 to Malvern and 9-2 to runners-up Wolverhampton Casuals were heavy defeats, but we conceded more than 4 on 7 other occasions.

Do you have any realistic targets in mind for incoming transfers?
New manager Joe Ball was appointed yesterday and has links to the University of Wolverhampton, so he believes he has the opportunity to bring some youngsters into the squad.

With the club not in the position to pay players its difficult to attract any proven players that will improve the club.

What are your targets for next season?
Top 10 finish enabling the club to qualify for the F.A. Cup.

Are there any other changes you would make?
New ground in the town would be ideal. We currently have no ground after being forced to sell the ground in 2009 to pay the outstanding debts to local brewery (https://www.expressandstar.com/news/2013/05/01/financial-pressures-force-willenhall-club-to-leave-ground/).

After ground sharing with Keyway Derby rivals Bilston Town for the last 3 years the club has as yet not secured a ground for the new season although rumour has it, depending on Wednesfields appeal (Club were refused promotion to Premier Division by WMRL due to ground regulations that have since been adhered too) to the FA, the club has an agreement to share with them.
