Heale Persuades Smith To Join Gulls

Tyron Smith said he was persuaded to come to Ryman League Premier Division club Canvey Island after new manager Danny Heale told him they are determined to win some silverware this season.

The 26-year-old (pictured), who has joined the Gulls from Ryman Premier rivals Met Police, made an instant impact in front of a 700-strong crowd at the Prospects Stadium with a sensational free-kick into the top corner in their showpiece friendly with Millwall on Monday night.

He completed the formalities on his move after the match and said he was delighted to commit to the island club, despite having to commute from his home in Farnborough.

He said: "The ambition here at Canvey is to go up this season. It is a very tough league but the minimum we want is play-offs, so we've all got to stick together, work hard and hopefully we will get there.

"I wanted to come here because Danny Heale told me they have a good squad and that they want to go up and win things. And that's a massive thing for me."

Smith helped Met Police win Ryman League Division One South in 2011 and his previous clubs include Fleet Town, Basingstoke Town, Maidstone United, Farnborough and Aldershot.
