Wycombe Snap Up Cheshunt Defender

League Two outfit Wycombe Wanderers have announced that Ryman League Division One North club Cheshunt's centre-back Tommy Fletcher has agreed a one-year deal at Adams Park, with the option of a second year.

The 18-year-old played 45 minutes of Saturday's 1-0 victory at Havant & Waterlooville, impressing alongside Gary Doherty at the heart of the defence.

Fletcher (pictured), who is set to feature in tonight's friendly at Eastleigh, has been training with the Chairboys since last Monday.

"It's my dream," he told wwfc.com. "I've always wanted to be a professional player and I'm just glad that I've signed a contract today and got here.

"I'm over the moon to be at Wycombe. It's such a big club and I've never experienced anything like it.

"I've been in Non-League football and this is my first time at a pro club. I was there (Cheshunt) for five or six years and this was my first trial and now my first club."

Fletcher added: "I was very happy with my performance at Havant. We kept a clean sheet and that's what I was hoping for as a defender.

"He (Gareth Ainsworth) told me that I'd had a very good game which was encouraging for me. He gave me some pointers which is what I want from a manager.

"It was a whole new experience. I've watched Doc play since I was young, he's a great centre-back and to play alongside him was brilliant."

Ainsworth added: "Signing Tommy owes a lot Lee's (Harrison) contacts in the game who brought him to our attention.

"He's impressed in training and in the game against Havant and did more than enough to make us want to sign him.

"He's got the raw materials and more. With hard work and coaching he can go on to be a very good player.

"Other clubs were interested in him, and we're pleased to have secured his signature."
