HASTING APPOINT SOUTHALL 16/12/2004
Neville Southall MBE, has been appointed as manager of Ryman league Division One club Hastings United.
A naturally delighted chairman David Walters said: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Neville Southall as our new manager and hope that his time at the club proves to be successful and enjoyable for all concerned.
“Neville surely needs no introduction to anyone, as his playing record speaks for itself. However, for our younger supporters, here’s a brief summary: MBE 1995; Footballer of the Year 1985; FA Cup winner 1984 and 1995; League Championship winner 1985 and 1987; European Cup Winners Cup winner 1985; record appearances for Wales and Everton.
“At the peak of his career, Neville was considered by many good judges to be the best goalkeeper in the world. Wow! He also has twelve years coaching experience in both the Football League as well as non-League, and I consider that we are very fortunate to have secured the services of such a vastly experienced and well-known player and personality within the game.
“I have been greatly impressed with the ideas Neville has already come up with to take the club forward and am really looking forward to working alongside him to bring success to the club.
“His first game will be a watching brief for the Hastings Senior Cup tie against Sidley United on December 21st. He will then take charge for the match at Ashford Town on December 27th, where ex-England international Terry Fenwick is the current manager.
“Most of us know that we cannot expect miracles to happen overnight, but if we all get behind him and give our 100% support, I cannot help but be very optimistic about the future.”
