IVYBRIDGE ARE CHAMPS 16/04/2006
Ivybridge Town are the Axworthys Office Supplies Devon League champions.
They ensured their first title on Saturday by winning 3-1 away at basement dwellers St Loyes.
The Exeter club gave the Ivy's a good start by scoring an own goal but Paul Baker doubled the lead before half time. St Loyes briefly caused panic for the Ivy's when Ricki Carpenter reduced the arrears but the Ivy's were not to be denied as James Lynch scored from the penalty spot.
With five games left the Ivy's may yet set some league records, in particular the record title winning margin appears well within their reach.
The race for second spot is still very much alive and the three main challengers were all in action on Saturday.
Ottery St Mary are currently in the position to claim most points of the trio and today they won 1-0 away at Buckland Athletic with Mark Simic scoring the all important goal. Plymstock United, who were held to a draw, claimed all three points with a 2-0 derby win at home to local rivals Elburton Villa, thanks to a second half brace from Richard Hope. Dartmouth lost ground, however, when they could only manage a point from a goalless draw at home to Crediton United.
Elsewhere, Newton Abbot got back to winning ways with a 4-1 victory away at Cullompton Rangers where Dan Broadway scored twice and both Dave Clark and Shaun Friend also netted, Cully having a Matthew Scott consolation.
Teignmouth, whose manager Gary Zink announced his resignation last week, had a good 4-2 local derby win at home to Newton Abbot Spurs. Ian Wilkinson scored twice with Craig Breslan and Alex Blackburn also on target with Spurs replying through Matt Barkwell and Nick Cousins.
Alphington kept up their recent good run with a 2-0 win away at Appledore in the battle of the leagues two sides beginning with the letter "A". Aaron Pugh and James Hartley securing the points at Marshford and enabling the Alphas to still grab the fourteenth place in the table that would guarantee entry into next year’s Devon Premier Cup third round draw.
