LAWFORD THE EXCEPTION
20/08/2007 |
|
Northwood started life in the Ryman League Division One North with a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Canvey Island. However, Colin Payne possesses one of the youngest squads in the division and will need time for the team to gel.
Payne has promoted a number of his young players from the club`s reserve side and his new signings are mostly around the early twenty age group.
An exception is veteran forward John Lawford (pictured), who joined as player-coach having played at Hemel Hempstead Town last season.
Lawford has been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career, which started at Luton Town, and he subsequently played for a number of clubs, including Bishop`s Stortford, Hayes, Aylesbury United, Wokingham Town, Berkhamsted Town, Chesham United, Harrow Borough, Boreham Wood and Waltham Forest.
Ashley Harris, 21, has been brought in to challenge for the goalkeepers` jersey having previously been on the books at Enfield Town and Aveley, and he is joined by defenders Jazz Rose, 20, signed from Hendon, and 22-year-old Adam Theo, son of Farnborough`s Tony, who was released by Boro recently and is a former Reading and Yeading player.
Midfield has been strengthened with the arrival of Stephan Brown, 22, from Molten Spartan South Midlands Leaguers Hoddesdon Town, Hanwell Town`s player of the year Chris Mills, 21, and a highly-promising 16-year-old in Aryah Tajbakhsh from Kentish Town.
In attack, to supplement Lawford is 18-year-old Theo Ohene, who has returned to Wood from Biggleswade Town, and 19-year-old Adam Cornell, who is on a dual registration with Blue Square South club Hayes & Yeading United.
