UNIBOND LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW... 12/08/2009
Returning to the UniBond League from the Blue Square North when the season kicks-off on Saturday are King`s Lynn, Burscough and Hucknall Town.
The former were members of the competition for three seasons in the early eighties, winning the President’s Cup in 1983 during their brief sojourn.
In much more recent times both Hucknall and Burscough were promoted from the UniBond League as champions with the former landing the Premier Division title in 2004 and the latter in 2007.
Promoted to the league from the opposite direction are AFC Fylde, Market Drayton Town and Mickleover Sports from the Vodkat North West Counties League, Aspire Midland Alliance and KoolSport Northern Counties East League respectively, whilst Chasetown make the switch from the Zamaretto (Southern) League.
Newcastle Blue Star`s resignation, unfortunately, came after the league’s AGM in June leaving the Premier Division one club short.
The big winners from off the field of play decisions made nationally are Brigg Town and Rossendale United, both of whom were reprieved from relegation, despite finishing bottom of the two respective First Divisions.
Relegated from the top flight are Leigh Genesis, Prescot Cables and Witton Albion, whilst Cammell Laird were demoted on ground grading issues, thus saving Whitby Town, who had finished level on points with Lairds but were the lower placed of the two with a goal difference of 58-71 as compared to 58-70.
Promoted to the Premier Division are Division One North champions Durham City and their Southern Division counterparts Retford United, with the southern section play-off winners Stocksbridge Park Steels also going up. For all three it will be a first ever taste of football at that level.
The northern section play-off winners were Newcastle Blue Star, whose demise leaves the Premier Division one club short as mentioned above.
Premier Division clubs have seen little by way of managerial changes. Nantwich Town lost their manager Steve Davis who became assistant-manager at Crewe Alexandra during the close season after six years with the “Dabbers” but, although expected to make an announcement regarding a replacement shortly, at the moment team affairs are in the hands of Coach Peter Hall.
Meanwhile, over on the East Coast a name long associated with the UniBond League moves back to the competition with Harry Dunn replacing Graham Clarke who stood down as manager of Whitby Town after the end of last season.
Dunn (pictured), who took Blyth Spartans to the 2006 UniBond Premier Division title and last season to big time televised FA Cup matches that provided the North East club with financial salvation, has vast experience of the UniBond League even dating back to the first ever day of the new competition in 1968 when playing for Scarborough.
