BLUE SQUARE PREMIER SIDES BOW OUT BRAVELY
02/01/2010
Although none of the non-League sides created any FA Cup Third Round giantkillings, all three that played on Saturday gave an excellent account of themselves – two against Barclays Premier League opposition.

However, it was Blue Square Premier Luton Town who came the closest to causing an upset against former winners Southampton.

In the end only Rickie Lambert's 25-yard free kick took the Coca-Cola League One outfit past Luton into the Fourth Round.

Hatters` keeper Kevin Pilkington made a handful of fine saves before Lambert's expert strike in the 36th minute.

The away side came roaring back in the second half and Adam Newton should have equalised, but mis-kicked from two yards out when a goal looked certain.

At the other end, the Saints could have made sure of the win but Lambert and substitute Matt Paterson both shot wide.

Another Blue Square Premier side, Barrow, gave a great account of themselves against Premierhip Sunderland, who were grateful to a Fraizer Campbell’s double to earn their place in the hat for the next round.

At the Stadium of Light, Campbell latched on to crosses twice in the second half as the Bluebirds` dreams of cup romance were ended in the north-east to Premier League opposition for the second successive season.

However Barrow, who lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough in the Third Round in 2009, could be proud of their performance on what was always likely to be a difficult afternoon - especially after Steed Malbranque’s opening first half goal for the hosts.

And in the other tie involving a Blue Square Premier side on Saturday, Premiership Stoke City had to come from behind against York City to eventually go through 3-1.

York took the lead after 22 minutes when Neil Barrett headed in Alex Lawless' free kick.

But two goals in a minute put Stoke in the lead, the first after Danny Parslow deflected Rory Delap's throw into his own net after 24 minutes.

Ricardo Fuller headed in the second from close range after another Delap throw and Matthew Etherington made sure with a curling free kick on 58 minutes.

On Sunday it’s the turn of a fourth Blue Square Premier side, Forest Green Rovers, who perhaps have the best chance of all of them to reach the Fourth Round as they travel to Meadow Lane to tackle Coca-Cola League Two `giants` Notts County.
