ENFORCED BREAK ADDS TO HUNGER FOR SUCCESS
21/01/2010
Striker Chris Simm believes Southport’s enforced break has increased their hunger for the Blue Square North title.

The Sandgrounders were last in action on January 1st when they were thumped 4-0 by second-placed neighbours Fleetwood Town with Simm saying three weeks of postponed games has renewed the side’s desire to cement their title credentials.

Whilst some club’s will have struggled to deal with the weather, 25-year-old Simm has praised the Port management for making sure no training sessions were missed and ensuring fitness levels were maintained.

But after Simm admitted the Yellows put in a jaded display at Fleetwood, their third game in six days over the festive period, the former Hyde United man feels two free weekends will have reinvigorated the squad ahead of Saturday’s match with AFC Telford United.

Simm said: “We may have struggled any other time but with Liam Watson and the staff we have been able to keep going.

“They have taken us boxing and with the games not being on we have had a nice little rest - to be honest because we have not played we are really charged up for Saturday.

“On New Year’s Day we looked really tired, we had probably done too much over Christmas and with only having a small squad it took its toll.

“The defeat was pretty bad, we never really looked like being in it, but when Alan Moogan got sent-off, it really killed us. We were all totally gutted afterwards and couldn’t really understand how we could put five past them on Boxing Day but then they put four past us less than a week later.

“But, like I say, the break will help us because it has given us time to reflect on getting battered.”
