REDS BORROW TWO YOUNG IRONS 21/01/2010
Two promising Coca-Cola Championship players have joined Kevin Wilson's campaign to push Ilkeston Town up the Blue Square North table.
Striker Matt Godden and left-sided player Rory Coleman (pictured) are due to remain at the New Manor Ground until April 18th.
The pair, newly arrived from Scunthorpe United, made an immediate impact in the 1-0 defeat at Fleetwood Town on Saturday, the Robins’ first league action for forty-two days.
They are both first-year professionals who are building experience during loan spells. Coleman, 19, played eleven games for Harrogate Town and scored seven goals.
And the 18-year-old Godden went to Brigg Town where he scored nine goals in twenty UniBond League Division One South matches, offering Wilson the prospect of finishing off attacking moves.
Since the season began, he has lost David Graham to a broken leg while fellow striker Jon Douglas left in search of more first team starts. The situation has worsened recently because Amari Morgan-Smith has been ill.
The concern showed up in Wilson’s assessment of last Saturday’s defeat at the home of one of the promotion favourites.
“Like most of the season, we lacked a cutting edge, lacked a finish,” said Wilson, who was generally satisfied with the way his squad came roaring back from their enforced break.
Wilson added: “We have a young squad and sometimes they are a little bit naive. But they acquitted themselves well, considering they had not played for six weeks. We deserved a draw.”
The Robins have a blank Saturday with their league trip to Hyde United switched to Monday on the instructions of police, who have another non-League game nearby at the weekend.
Ilkeston’s next scheduled home league game is the visit of Droylsden, when the takings will be much appreciated after such a long time without income.
It comes at a time when ground improvements are imperative but good neighbours may help Ilkeston avoid a £14,000 bill to upgrade floodlights and meet strict rules in the Football Conference.
Robins officials hope Chesterfield will donate their lights at the end of the season when they finally leave Saltergate for a new base on the edge of town.
Ilkeston secretary Keith Burnand said the Spireites’ electrician has visited the New Manor Ground and believes their equipment could be fitted onto the pylons. He carried out further checks this week.
The Football Association has produced a list of improvements needed for the club to remain in the Blue Square North or risk relegation because their facilities fall short. As well as better floodlights, they are insisting on larger dressing rooms, hot and cold water in the physiotherapist’s room - as well as a better couch for treating players.
They have even insisted on new signs to point out the ladies’ toilets at the ground. The FA has agreed to extend its normal March 31st deadline for most of the work.
They will now be asked to allow the floodlighting work to be completed on May 31ST.
