WILLENHALL SOLD?
26/01/2010
Steve Pomroy reckons he has got the `Job from Hell` after becoming manager of UniBond League Division One South basement club Willenhall Town – but he has no intention of quitting.

Pomroy admits dealing with the Lockmen’s plight – in administration, at the bottom of the table after a ten-point deduction, and with no playing budget – has been far tougher than he had anticipated.

And now his future is uncertain after the club was sold.

Pomroy, who had two spells as a player at Noose Lane, says he expects to know more within the next month, but it appears the new buyers are another football club with ambitions to play higher.

“The club has definitely been sold, and sold to another club from the Walsall area,” said Pomroy. “It was a bombshell.

“Whether they want to develop Willenhall as well or use it as a front for their existing club, I don’t know.

“I’m told the contracts have been drawn up and it should be resolved in seven to ten days.

“I suppose then we will know whether they want to keep us or whether they will bomb us out. But at the moment we will continue to work hard.

“I won’t walk away – I will see it through. For all of the headaches, I’ve loved the involvement with the players and I’ve enjoyed it.”

Pomroy and Mick Rawlins answered the financially stricken club’s SOS when Shaun Cunnington left in November. But the pair describes the situation at Noose Lane as ‘a mess, on and off the park’. They have released a dozen players for various reasons and drafted in fifteen.

Crucially, skipper Todd Perry and Shaun Griffiths have stayed and some former players – Nick Eagles, Troy Doughlin, Wayne Brown and Adam Robins – have returned.

And the newcomers have been essentially young local hopefuls such as youth teamers George Crowe, Craig Deakin and Dean Humpage, ex-West Brom rookies Ricky Nicholls, Adam Manchester and Nathan Howells, plus Matt Whitehouse from Oldbury Athletic and Carlton Rose from Sutton Coldfield Town. Michael Forrester has also linked up after playing for a spell in New Zealand.

“It’s tough – we’re competing against teams with budgets of £2,500 to £4,000 per week and our players don’t get paid,” said Pomroy. “But we’ve still got twenty-six players. The average age is 21 and the young local players have been a breath of fresh air. They just want to do well.”
