CHATS` PLAYERS TAKE A PAY CUT
04/02/2010
Ryman League Division One South club Chatham Town`s players were faced with the news that they would have to take a pay cut just minutes after beating Kent rivals Whitstable Town last Saturday.

Town boss Alex O’Brien gave his squad a few days to let him know if they are willing to accept the new terms or move on, and he’s hoping it’s the former.

O’Brien said: "After the game unfortunately we had to tell them some bad news, although it’s not all doom and gloom.

"The reaction from some of the boys was ‘no problem’ but I’ve told them all to go away and think about it.

"Myself and assistant Lew Watts knew something might happen because of the snow and all of the games that were called off. Everyone in the game is feeling the pinch - it’s not just us and not just this league.

"We knew it was coming but we didn’t know what the reaction would be. Players being players they care about their money."

Chatham’s win over Whitstable left them seventh in the table and O’Brien is hoping they can keep the squad together.

"Hopefully they’ll all still be here and we’ll give it a really good go," he added.

"We want to show people we are capable of a play-off place. I hope all the boys stick together."
