THORNLEY FAR FROM FINISHED YET! 08/02/2010
`Golden oldie` Mark Thornley, who notched up 487 appearances for UniBond League Division One North club Lancaster City, insists he is not ready to hang up his gloves.
"I read a newspaper article saying I'd retired, but that's not true – I'm desperate to play on," said the veteran goalkeeper.
"I've had fantastic times in non-League football, especially at Lancaster, where I enjoyed the most enjoyable spell of my career. I'm 44, but I've a lot to offer the game and I'm not ready to retire yet.
"I train every day and I'm in good condition, I'm still very confident in my own ability."
Giant Axe boss Tony Hesketh handed the keeper's gloves to Martin Fearon at the start of term, and Thornley joined Clitheroe on loan.
But he has played just once at Shawbridge, and added: "It was great for Peter Smith to take me to Clitheroe, but I'm in no-man's land because I'm not playing.
"At the start of the season I was desperate to break 500 appearances for Lancaster, and I wanted to achieve that then probably retire.
"But Tony Hesketh has gone with Martin Fearon and you have to accept that happens. Tony is doing a fantastic job, and I hope they go up, but it all ended a bit sourly, and that hurts a bit."
Thornley added: "I made my Lancaster debut with Barrie Stimpson at Blyth in January 1995, and my last game was against Wakefield in April 2009, so it was a special time in my life.
"But all this talk about retirement has made me even more determined to carry on and I'd like to play next season. I can still perform at this level, and I've missed the involvement.
"Hopefully something will turn up, and I'm open to offers."
