SURPRISE AT TELFORD AS JONES IS HANDED THE POST
12/05/2003
Mick Jones was somewhat surprisingly unveiled as Jake King's successor at Nationwide Conference club Telford United at a midday press conference at the New Bucks Head Stadium.

The appointment of Jones seems to have come out of the blue, as it was believed Coventry City's Gary Mills was favourite for the position, with former Wolves and England striker Steve Bull also in contention.

However, in the end chairman Andy Shaw has plumped for experience in the shape of 56-year-old Jones, who had a spell working at Nuneaton Borough last season.

Jones (pictured) played almost 200 games for Notts County and Peterborough before taking over as player-manager of then Southern League side Kettering Town in 1976 following a short spell as player-coach at Canadian outfit Ottawa Tigers.

It was whilst in charge of the Poppies that the Sunderland-born Jones really made his name in management.

He soon gave up playing and built one of the best and most exciting sides seen at Rockingham Road for many years, eventually leading them to the 1979 FA Trophy Final at Wembley.

Although Kettering surprisingly lost that final to Stafford Rangers, Jones' talents as a manager had already been noted and he immediately took over as boss at Mansfield shortly afterwards instead of leading the Poppies into the newly-formed Alliance Premier League, which certainly disappointed Kettering supporters, who held him in such high esteem.

Since then he has been assistant-manager to Roy McFarland at Bradford City and Derby and for Neil Warnock at both Plymouth and Notts County.

He has also managed Halifax Town, Peterborough and Plymouth and was also in charge of then Brunei National side before becoming Steve Burr's number two last October before leaving and replaced by Alan Lewer who, of course, has now been handed the managerial reins at Manor Park.
