MOLESEY STUNNED AT HAZEL'S DEPARTURE 01/06/2003
Players, supporters and officials of Ryman League Division One South club Molesey have been stunned by the sudden departure of manager Ian Hazel.
Hazel, who previously managed Tooting & Mitcham United, had been hailed a hero by Moles' fans after rescuing the club from a seemingly inevitable relegation last season.
Just two weeks ago, Hazel spoke of his plans for the future and insisted: "I know the chairman is very ambitious, and so am I."
Now, Hazel's about-turn has caused a stir, but said: "Although I am aware the chairman is very upset, I had to do what I thought was best for myself and the club."
Chairman Norman Clark was indeed furious and disappointed at the decision and said: "Ian Hazel came in at a very awkward time for the club and did an excellent job. He became something of a folk hero in a short space of time, but he has wiped out all that goodwill by leaving us in the lurch.
"We met with him last week for a three-hour meeting where we discussed the budget, his wages and new players. I thought he was committed to the club only for him to ring me a few days later and tell me he didn't want to carry on.
"I am not happy about the way he has done this, nor his motives for changing his mind so suddenly. It has left a bitter taste."
