DUTCH COUP FOR NEWCASTLE TOWN
06/09/2003
North West Counties League club Newcastle Town have pulled off something of a coup by signing vastly experienced Dutch midfielder Robin van der Laan.

Now 34, van der Laan, made his name with Newcastle's neighbours Port Vale, where he made over 170 appearances following his signing from Dutch side Wageningen in 1991.

Derby County paid £500,000 for his services four years later and he then moved to Barnsley for £325,000 in 1998 and totalled over 300 appearances, many of which were in the Premiership.

Van der Laan (pictured), who was originally with PSV Eindhoven, was forced to retire from the professional game in March 2001 after suffering and injury against Watford and gave up the hope to return back to fitness.

However, he has mounted a comeback with Newcastle and he marked his debut with a goal in their 5-0 romp at home to Glossop North End on Tuesday.

The Dutchman appeared as a second-half substitute and added to strikes by Paul Kiely (two), Daryl Wilkes and Mark Beeston as Town chalked up their fourth successive win.
