HAZEL ROLLS BACK THE YEARS! 22/11/2003
Former Wimbledon and Bristol Rovers midfielder Ian Hazel rolled back the years last Saturday when he played his first match for three years after signing for Ryman League Division One South club Banstead Athletic.
Hazel, who will be 36 on December 1st, was recently manager of neighbouring Tooting & Mitcham United until being replaced by Richard Cadette. He is good friends with Banstead boss Bob Langford and came to his aid after an injury crisis hit the Merland Rise outfit.
Hazel played the full 90 minutes of the 1-1 draw with Croydon Athletic and although he doubts his return to playing is a long-term move, he enjoyed his is comeback.
“It was very pleasing to get through the match and, con-sidering I hadn’t played for three years, I thought I put in a decent performance,” said Hazel, who works as a full-time coach at Premiership Fulham.
“I stopped playing after a bad back injury and because I got the Tooting job. But I have kept fit and believe you should play for as long as possible.”
“I’m not sure how many games Bob will want me for, but I’ll give it my best if selected.”
After leaving the full-time game following spells with the Dons, Bristol Rovers and Maidstone United, Hazel spent a number of years as a player on the Ryman League scene with the likes of Slough Town, Carshalton Athletic, Aylesbury United and Chesham United, joining Tooting in October 1998.
