YORK BAN KEEPER AFTER CROWD INCIDENT
31/08/2004
Nationwide Conference National club York City’s experienced goalkeeper Paul Crichton has been banned from playing for the team while bosses investigate allegations that he hurled abuse at fans during the side's latest defeat on Saturday.

Player-manager Chris Brass met with Crichton to hear his side of reports that a slanging match erupted with supporters during Saturday's 4-0 away defeat at the hands of Gravesend & Northfleet.

At one point, a missile was thrown on to the pitch and the game was stopped for repairs to the net to be carried out. Two teenagers were also ejected from the ground in an effort to quell the tension.

Club chairman Steve Beck and communications director Sophie McGill spoke to stewards and about 20 York fans on the terraces during half-time, and took comments from them about the incident.

Miss McGill said: "The board of York City Football Club and the manager, Chris Brass, are investigating the matter. Until a conclusion has been reached, Paul Crichton will not play for York City Football Club."

She said the investigation was an internal matter and Crichton (pictured) would be unavailable for comment at present.

The doubts over Crichton's future with City come as pressure increased on manager Brass to improve his side's performance.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper has already been ruled out of Tuesday's home game with Accrington Stanley.

Crichton, who played for Norwich City last season before their promotion to the Premiership, has only appeared in three games for the Minstermen prior to Saturday's match and is on a week-to-week contract.

Eyewitnesses said he became embroiled in a verbal spat with York supporters behind the net about 30 minutes into the match, following Gravesend's first goal. He had been taunted with shouts of "Crichton out" earlier in the game.

Two 19-year-old supporters were asked to leave the ground by police in an attempt to calm the situation.
