PREECE JOINS SWANS AS NUMBER TWO
30/09/2004
Former Luton and Derby midfielder David Preece has been unveiled as the new assistant-manager at Ryman League Division One club Walton & Hersham by manager Terry Back.

Preece re-joins Back for a second time having been with him at Enfield as player/assistant boss.

Preece (pictured) made his name as a player for Luton during an eleven-year spell with the Hatters in the 1980s and 90s where he helped the Bedfordshire club reach two League Cup finals and an FA Cup semi-final.

He also played for Walsall and Derby during a 22-year playing career.

He has since been player-coach to Roy McFarland at Cambridge and Torquay before leaving the Plainmoor club at the end of the 2001/02 season following cost-cutting measures after the collapse of the ITV Digital deal.

Since then he has been involved at non-League level as player-coach at both Ryman Leaguers Enfield and at Conference side Stevenage Borough, whom he left upon the arrival of Graham Westley.

Preece returned to the E’s in February 2003 and, following Back’s departure, joined up with Telford United as coach under Mick Jones during the summer of 2003.

Another of Back’s former Enfield management team, Russell Townsend, has been brought into Stompnd Lane as the reserve side’s new player-manager.
