WILLENHALL OVERCOME STRIKER WALK-OUT TO EARN DRAW
19/01/2002
For Willenhall Town the drama started before the Midland Alliance match against high-flying Barwell even kicked off. Striker Clint Hughes (brother of Coventry's star Lee) deciding to walk out of the club after learning he was to start the match as substitute.

However, on a brighter note, Willenhall were able to announce their shock signing of former Torquay United star Scott Colcombe. The Noose Lane club somehow managing to fight off higher level clubs for the highly-rated midfielder.

On a soggy pitch both teams found it difficult to come to terms with the playing surface, and neither side created any real chances until 33 minutes when the visitors broke the dead lock. Aaron Skelding didn't deal with a run of the mill through ball and Dave Lucas collected the ball and blasted it past Nathan Vaughan.

Lucas nearly grabbed his second six minutes later when he again capitalised on poor defending, his shot however was blocked by the legs of Vaughan.

The second half exploded into action within a minute Tim Warner blasted over the Reds crossbar from 17 yards out.

However it was the Reds who started to dominate the match, on 51 minutes Mark Creighton out-jumped everyone to head narrowly over the bar. Two minutes later and Lucas saw his shot saved by a diving Vaughan.

On 55 minutes Noel Malcolm's run and shot was deflected for a Red's corner. From the clearance Barwell's sprightly Lucas ripped through the defence before unleashing a powerful shot which was tipped over the bar brilliantly by Vaughan, who was having an impressive game whilst being watched by scouts from Walsall.

Town's new signing Colcombe was unlucky not to win a penalty on 60 minutes when he was clean through on goal before being uprooted in the box.

However, the midfielder was to get his reward when on 75 minutes he chested a high through ball passed keeper Paul Grears, then blasted the ball into the corner of the Barwell goal.

Reds striker Malcolm could have sealed the Reds first win under their new management when on 80 minutes his volley was deflected away, and a minute later he saw his goal bound shot blocked by both hands of a defender.

Minutes later it was very nearly Barwell who wrapped up the match when Lucas was clean through with just the keeper to beat, however a super sliding tackle by James Price saved the day for the Reds.

The last effort of the match came on 89 minutes when Darren Goodall saw his shot back heeled off the line by a Barwell defender.

Willenhall have now recorded their 4th successive league draw under Rob Smith.

After this match Willenhall's keeper Nathan Vaughan goes on trial at Bradford City, but is due back for Willenhall's next match on Saturday 26th January, when they entertain neighbours Wednesfield.
