SHOCK AS BARTON QUITS WORCESTER..... 21/01/2005
Nationwide North club Worcester City have announced the resignation of respected manager John Barton.
Barton (pictured), who had been in charge at St George’s Lane for just over five years, saved the club from relegation in his first season and then went on to have improved finishes in each season, finishing fifth last season. He also lifted the Dr Martens Cup for the club in his first full season.
His resignation brings to an end a long association with the club, having been an outstanding player in the seventies, before being sold to Everton in 1979.
Club chairman Dave Boddy paid tribute to Barton saying: “We are all disappointed that John has decided to call it a day, but we understand and respect his reasons and decision. He has done a tremendous job for the club over the last five years and under our financial constraints what he has achieved has been excellent.
“Our year-on-year improvement in terms of league position and quality of squad has been there for all to see and had it not been for an unbelievable unlucky sequence of injuries who knows what we might have achieved. I would like to place on record our thanks for his dedication and loyalty to the cause.”
Player-coach John Snape will take over in a caretaker role assisted by chief scout, Graham Selby and club captain Carl Heeley.
The club will advertise the position and interested parties should write, including their CV, to the chairman at the Football Ground.
