SLABBER CHANCE AS ROBINSON IS RECALLED 07/04/2005
Terry Brown, manager of Nationwide Conference National club Aldershot Town, originally warned high-profile new signing Jamie Slabber that he would have to earn his place in the Shots’ starting line-up.
Slabber, 20, signed for the Shots last Thursday until the end of the season following his surprise release from Tottenham Hotspur.
But Brown made it clear from the start that he would have to dislodge their in-form strike force in order to aid Aldershot’s play-off bid and put himself in the shop window.
Slabber arrived at the Rec after an eleven-year spell at White Hart Lane, which saw him emerge into international football for England at under-18 and 19 level.
Brown said: “We obviously had to get another forward in but he’s come to us on the understanding that he won’t go straight into the team with Tim and Jake forming a nice little partnership right now.
“Hopefully he will get his chance to show us what he can do and put himself in the shop window come the summer.
“Jamie’s been at Tottenham for eleven years and been a top goalscorer every year at their academy and reserve team levels. If you do that then you’ve obviously got talent.
“He’s got great feet, a great touch and is very aware, creating as many chances as he will put away. Jamie’s yet to fill out and has got to prove himself both mentally and physically because Conference football is a lot different to what he’s been used to at Tottenham.”
Opportunities to make the step up to first team level have been restricted since the arrival of Martin Jol at White Hart Lane and this is Slabber’s third loan spell in the space of a year.
He enjoyed a three-month stint at Danish Super League outfit AB Copenhagen at the end of the 2003/04 season and has also been at Swindon Town this term.
Slabber’s biggest moment to date was a substitute appearance against Liverpool at White Hart Lane in 2003 when he came on to partner Teddy Sheringham and set up a goal in Spurs’ 3-2 defeat.
He is also a familiar face at the Rec having played their for Tottenham reserves against Chelsea last season.
However, his first-team chances at The Rec have been enhanced with the news that Brighton have recalled 18-year-old striker Jake Robinson from his loan spell with the Shots.
Robinson made a big impression during his short spell with the Shots, scoring four times in eight Conference starts.
Brighton boss Mark McGhee has made the move after facing a striker crisis as his side slipped into the bottom three of the Coca-Cola Championship.
