CURRAN ANSWERS WILLENHALL`S SOS 01/10/2005
With a trip to league leaders Ashford Town (Middx) looming, veteran defender Chris Curran, who was released by managerless Nationwide South side Newport County last week, has rejoined Southern League Division One West club Willenhall Town.
The timing of the move is crucial for Willenhall boss Rob Smith, as his high flying squad is currently so depleted by injuries, that even naming one substitute in recent weeks has proved something of a luxury.
The defensive issues show no sign of easing up either. Inderpaul Khela will be missing for the tricky trip to Middlesex due to a long-standing family engagement, Dave Arrowsmith is suspended and long-term injury victims Craig Slater and Vaughan Thomas are still some way short of a return to first-team action. Therefore, Curran (pictured) will add some vital presence and experience to the Willenhall rearguard.
Birmingham-born Curran, 34, made over 150 League appearances for Torquay before moving to Plymouth Argyle for £40,000 in 1995. After two successful years at Home Park, he moved on to Exeter City prior to the start of the 1997/98 season.
After dropping out of the professional game, he returned to his Midlands roots and joined Willenhall just before the start of last season. He left halfway through the Noose Lane club’s maiden season in the UniBond League to join Newport and remained with the Exiles before parting company with them last week.
