TORRIE APPOINT 19-YEAR-OLD MANAGER!
24/10/2005
Toolstation Western League Premier Division club Torrington have appointed probably the youngest manager in senior football.

Torrie have elevated 19-year-old Mike Small to the role of first-team manager.

Small (pictured) takes over the position from former boss Keith Viney, who has taken up a newly created role as director of football.

It was a move initiated by Viney as he struggles with the overhaul of the club he feels is required if the team are to be successful.

He said: "I am moving upstairs and will be in overall charge of all three teams. It will give me the chance to try and sort out the things that I think are fundamentally wrong with the club and Mike can try and improve things on the pitch."

Viney added: "It means that I can leave all the time consuming tasks of phoning players, arranging training and getting a team together to Mike, although I will still be on hand to help him if he needs it."

"It is certainly a bold move by the club, and one that was instigated by myself, but I think it is a positive move."

Chairman Winston Martin felt that the time was right for an adjustment "We couldn't go on the way we were and continue to lose matches, so something had to be done sooner rather than later.

"Keith came up with the idea of making these changes and Mike is keen to prove himself.

"Keith has worked tremendously hard for the club in the last 12 months and will continue to do so in his new position, and I would like to thank him for his efforts."

It is clearly a huge gamble by the Vicarage Field club as they attempt to steer themselves clear of the relegation zone, but a move that many supporters felt was required after the poor start to the season.

Small will be by far the youngest manager in the league and his lack of experience may prove to be a major handicap. It can only be hoped that he can make up for this with youthful enthusiasm.

Small joined the club halfway through last season and was a fairly consistent performer, but this season his progress has been restricted due to a career threatening knee injury.

Small has wasted little time in strengthening his squad. On board have come Kevin Blatchford, Maxwell Corderoy, Gary Ashton, Ben Davies, Matthew Johnson and Danny Brook, all from the South Devon area.
