NOW BROOKS JOINS BRACKLEY 30/12/2005
Southern League Division One West club Brackley Town signed their second Oxford United player on loan in a week after capturing the services of striker Jamie Brooks in time for Tuesday’s game against Leighton Town.
Brooks (pictured), 22, was poised for a big money move to Arsenal as an 18-year-old after scoring ten goals in his first season as a professional.
However, the life-threatening Guillain-Barre Syndrome a day before he was due to have a trial with the north London giants in April 2002 struck him down.
Brooks was almost killed by the virus, which was also suffered by former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel and ex-Celtic midfielder Morten Wieghorst.
He made an amazing recovery and was back playing football after little more than year. However, it was not until the end of last year – two-and-a-half years after becoming ill – that he broke back into Oxford's first-team.
The unfortunate Brooks had only a handful of games before being sidelined again by injuries and he has not figured since.
He has had a number of loan spells, though, most recently at Ryman League Premier Division Slough Town.
