WILLENHALL TURN TO FORMER WOLVES FAVOURITE 06/03/2006
Southern League Division One West club Willenhall Town have announced the appointment of former Wolves star Mel Eves as their new manager.
Another ex-Wolves player, Dean Edwards, also joins the club as Eves' assistant and they take charge with immediate effect, with their first game in their new roles being a 1-1 draw at Dunstable Town on Saturday.
The posts became vacant two weeks ago when Rob Smith and Larry Chambers, who after four successful seasons at the helm, decided to move on to take the reins at UniBond League Premier Division side AFC Telford United.
Eves joins Willenhall for his first stint in football management. The former Wolves ace, who is a licensed football agent and has represented some of the best players in the game, said of his new role: "Promotion is still very much an achievable target. This is a great club with a good history and it’s very well run."
Edwards has previous non-League management experience with Pelsall Villa, and during his playing days was with Wolves and Torquay United.
Eves faces a busy week of wheeling and dealing in a bid to strengthen his squad after key men John Quilt and Vaughan Thomas left Noose Lane.
Quilt has linked up with fellow Division One West side Rushall Olympic while Thomas has moved to Nationwide North outfit Redditch United.
Chris Curran has also left the Reds, who are down to the bare bones following last month's departure of Gary Hay and Indy Khela.
Eves admitted it would be a busy time at Noose Lane as he looks to bring in new players to bolster their promotion bid.
"Over the next week or so we're going to have to bring in two or three players in to get the squad up to what we need.
"Up front and defence are our two main areas of concern so we'll definitely have to strengthen there in the next few days.
"But we're confident of doing that. We've got good enough contacts, I've already had people phoning me to offer their help, we know a lot of people at this level.
"I've also been in touch with professional clubs to see if we can help players on the fringe of their squad.
"Sometimes players can caught in limbo between the youth team and the first-team so there's an opportunity for us to help them and them to help us."
Eves insisted the players still with Willenhall were determined to carry on the club's push for promotion.
"The lads are very positive, they're a good set with a good attitude.
"Everybody's upbeat and we told them we want to carry on the good work they've been doing this season."
