CARTWRIGHT PLEASED TO LAND BARROW
12/06/2006
Mark Cartwright, manager of UniBond League Premier Division club Leek Town, believes the signing of seasoned defender Lee Barrow will produce extra benefits.

Cartwright is banking on the 33-year-old not only lending his experience to the Leek defence, but also helping to further the development of youngster Paul Booth.

Booth, formerly with Oldham Athletic, made such progress last season that he picked up both the players' and manager's player of the year awards.

Cartwright sees Barrow (pictured above) and Booth forming the central defensive partnership and he said: "Having Lee alongside will do Paul the world of good."

The Blues` boss snapped up Barrow from relegated Hednesford Town after Jamie Davies, who was on loan to Leek from Morecambe last season, had been offered another contract by the Nationwide Conference National outfit.

Cartwright said: "Once that happened I knew I needed to bring in a centre-half and Lee was the ideal candidate, being older and more experienced.

"He played 200 Football League games for Torquay and helped Barry Town qualify for Europe. I think I played against him when I was in goal for Wrexham."

Barrow is Leek's first summer signing, but Cartwright is in talks with two other players and is also hoping to keep veteran ex-Port Vale striker Adrian Littlejohn on the books.

The manager said: "Adrian did well for us when he came in towards the end of the season. His role with the Sheffield United Academy has changed and he will now be available for midweek games."
