GURNEY COUP FOR BATER 28/12/2006
British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division club Clevedon Town have signed defender Andrew Gurney.
The Bristol-born player, who will be 33 next month, was released by Swindon Town at the beginning of December.
He began his career as a trainee with Bristol Rovers and went on to make 108 appearances for the Pirates, scoring nine goals.
Following a move to Torquay United in 1997 he scored ten goals in sixty-four appearances for the Gulls. Just over a year later Gurney (pictured) joined Reading and scored three times in sixty-seven appearances before another move took him to Swindon Town where he made 132 appearances and netted 20 goals.
He signed for Swansea City in the 2004/05 season and scored once in twenty-eight appearances before re-joining Swindon for twenty-eight more appearances.
Gurney, a friend of Clevedon's central defender Scott Hendy, was forced to quit the professional game a couple of months ago after an ankle injury made it impossible for him to see out his contract at the County Ground.
"Signing Andy is a big boost for the club and he came into play his first game since April," said Seasiders` boss Phil Bater (pictured above). "Once he gets fitter he will make a big difference to us as he can play in defence or midfield.”
