WESTON GO FOR GURNEY 22/02/2007
Nationwide South club Weston-super-mare have completed the signing of former Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers player Andy Gurney from British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division neighbours Clevedon Town in a bid to boost their attempt to pull clear of the relegation zone.
Gurney (pictured) was forced to quit the professional game earlier this season due to a persistent ankle injury which would not stand up to the strain of full-time football. But after a few months off he decided to see how the ankle stood up to the non-League game.
Things went well for him at Clevedon under former Bristol Rovers manager Phil Bater, who would have liked to have kept him but was unable to match what Weston or Newport County, who were also interested, offered.
At present Weston find themselves just two places above the bottom three clubs and need to start winning quickly as all the clubs below them have played less games and can overtake if they win their games in hand, with the exception of rock bottom Bedford Town.
Gurney has agreed terms until the end of the season and manager Frank Gregan sees him as a player capable of giving their season a boost from a central midfield role.
He is set to make his debut in Saturday's home game against Lewes.
