BAYES DESPERATE FOR GRECIANS RETURN
25/05/2007
Free agent Ashley Bayes is so keen to return to Blue Square Premier club Exeter City he has been avoiding calls from other interested clubs.

The 35-year-old keeper has already held talks with Grecians boss Paul Tisdale about returning to St James's Park after an eight-year absence.

And Bayes (pictured), who was released by Grays Athletic at the end of last season, said: "I am so desperate to come back to Exeter I would walk there to sign."

The experienced stopper has been aware of Exeter's interest for quite a while and has even talked terms with Tisdale.

But he says there has been no contact since the Grecians play-off final defeat to Morecambe and now faces an anxious wait to see if the City manager moves to conclude a deal.

"I would love to sign but I don't know if it is going to happen," continued Bayes, who left St James's Park for Leyton Orient back in 1999.

"I was ready to come but I have not heard anymore, nothing has happened since the play-off game.

"I have been down for talks with Paul Tisdale and Bucks but nothing more has happened really.

"I am waiting to hear something, it has been a long ongoing thing for quite a while, but I would love to come back.

"It is not very nice waiting like this, but that is the way it goes and I suppose I will have to be patient.

"The thing is that there is other interest," he added. "I have been inundated with calls. There are three clubs in the Conference and several others in different divisions.

"I have even been swerving a few because I am banking on going to Exeter.

"I loved it when I was down there before and I still have friends in the area but I guess all I can do is wait."

Following Martin Rice's controversial departure from St James's Park this week, Paul Jones is the only senior contracted keeper at the club.

Bayes has also represented Hornchurch, Woking, Bohemians and Torquay in a seventeen-year career that began at Brentford in 1990.
