IMPRESSIVE TURNOUT FOR LAIRD
02/07/2007
Ollie Walby, who scored twenty-five goals for Somerset County League side Wells City last season, was one of several new faces when British Gas Business Southern League Division South & West newcomers Bridgwater Town began pre-season training last week.

The wide-left midfielder or striker is ambitious to play at a higher level and has his eye on first-team football with Town. "He is very interested in signing," said reserves' manager Rob Dray, who took training, the second of three sessions in the first week, because first-team boss Craig Laird had work commitments.

Thursday's turn-out included some notable names, such as Scottish international brothers Scott and Jamie Laird, sons of the Town manager, and ex-Town defender Matt Villis, who has just been released by Torquay United.

Defender Villis, 23, from Nether Stowey, is hoping to get another League club after three frustrating seasons at Torquay, who have been relegated to the Blue Square Premier. Injury and constant changes of management restricted him to only forty League appearances.

Laird (pictured) and Paul Rich brought Villis to Fairfax Park when the duo were reserve-team managers and he was soon snapped up by Plymouth. Laird said: "I've told him he should get himself another League club, but he needs to play regularly again and we would be very happy for him to join us if it could be arranged."

Taunton Town defender Dean Coppard and Tiverton Town pair Jamie Skinner and Nat Pepperall were also at the first session. "We have a little bit of negotiating to do, but all three are very interested in joining us," said Laird. On Thursday, Adam Kelly, a former Bideford and Tiverton midfield player, also came along to training.

Laird had the whole squad, first-team and reserves, training on Saturday as well. "We're going to need to be very fit for our first season in the higher league," he said, adding: "We'll be concentrating on fitness for the next three or four weeks and they won't be seeing a ball for some time."
