FORMER UNITED BOSS SACKED BY JOCKEYS
23/08/2007
John Taylor and Newmarket Town have parted company just three matches into the new Ridgeons League Premier Division season.

The Jockeys' committee took the decision to replace the former Cambridge United boss at the weekend.

A club statement said: "It was decided at a committee meeting on Sunday evening that Taylor would be relieved of his position as manager with immediate effect.

"The club does not wish to discuss publicly the reasons for this, but wishes John Taylor all the best for the future."

Taylor only arrived at the Town Ground in February, succeeding Dave Abbs for the final 12 games of last season.

But he managed only three wins and started this season with two defeats, including a 6-1 hammering in the derby against Soham. They got their first point at Kirkley & Pakefield on Saturday - Jon Olive scoring twice and Ibby Abutarboush getting the other in a 3-3 draw - but it was not enough to save the manager.

Taylor (pictured) said: "It was a shock, but nothing should really surprise me in football. I'm sure a lot of it was not to do with football reasons, but was more political."

Reserve team boss Tony Marshall will step in as caretaker-manager from Saturday's home league game against Leiston, but chairman Kevin Grainger looked after the side for Tuesday night's league clash against Walsham-le-Willows which the Jockeys lost 3-2 at the Town Ground.
