STANT BEGINS RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN 30/06/2002
Cambridge United's Dean Walling has become one of four players to have joined new manager Phil Stant's at UniBond League Premier Division club Gainsborough Trinity.
Defender Walling, who made over 400 appearances in the Football League, is one of four new faces at the Northolme as new boss Stant puts together a squad capable of challenging for Premier Division honours next season.
Ex-Lincoln City boss Stant, has also captured defender Darren Knowles, striker Mark Anderson and midfielder Andy Brownrigg.
Knowles has signed from Conference side Northwich Victoria, while Brownrigg also had a spell with the Vics but ended last season with Dr Martens League Premier Division side Hednesford Town.
Anderson makes his way to the Northolme from nearby Nationwide Third Division club Scunthorpe United.
Walling, 33, joins from Third Division Cambridge United and will double up as Blues' player-coach.
"All these signings will give us a solid foundation on which to work," said Stant.
"Knowles and Walling are excellent signings and will offer us a great deal of experience.
"Knowles has played a lot of games and he will give Danny Brown some competition at right-wing back.
"Dean Walling meanwhile is a quality player. He is a great capture. He can score goals and is very strong at the back, while Mark Anderson is a talented young forward who will compliment Lee Ellington as he can hold up the ball very well.
"We are also speaking to a few more players and I hope to have secured some more signatures over the coming week. I want to have a squad of 17 - that would be ideal."
St Kitts & Nevis international Walling will bring back fond memories among Lincoln City fans who appreciated his tireless performances at Sincil Bank.
The former Carlisle favourite and joint-record City signing, made over 200 League appearances for the Cumbrians, but had his City career cut short by a persistent knee injury.
He went on to play for Doncaster Rovers in the Conference before ending up back under former Imps manager John Beck at Cambridge. Walling made 20 appearances in Division Two last season.
